As per the tradition of Raksha Bandhan, sisters tie rakhi on their brother’s wrist, and in turn they promise to protect their sisters. But in modern times, Raksha Bandhan is also celebrated between two sisters as a bond of protection (raksha).
Raksha Bandhan is all about celebrating the bond between siblings, regardless of the gender.
History of Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan is being celebrated for centuries. The history of this celebration is related to the times of Mahabharata.
It is believed that once Lord Krishna injured his finger. To stop his finger from bleeding, Draupadi tore a piece of cloth from her saree and tied it on his finger.
Krishna then promised to protect her all his life. When the Kauravas tried to harm Draupadi’s dignity by disrobing her, Krishna used his divine powers to save her.
Many of you may not know but during the Lord Curzon protest in Bengal, the great poet Rabindranath Tagore urged Hindus and Muslims to tie Rakhi on each other’s wrist to express solidarity and harmony among each other.
Celebrating Raksha Bandhan
Raksha Bandhan is a special day for all siblings. This is one such day when mothers also fight with their brothers to get a better gift. It feels like they are once again living their younger days.
The celebration of Raksha Bandhan includes buying and wearing new clothes, buying gifts, cooking delicious food and sweet dishes. Sisters decorate the home with clay diyas and worship God in the presence of elders. After performing Aarti, sisters put a “tilak” on their brothers’ forehead and tie the rakhi. In return, brothers vow to protect their sisters and give them gifts.
The celebration of Rakhi is simple, and yet so meaningful. It is meant to strengthen the bonds between a brother and sister. This auspicious day is celebrated by different cultures in different states.
Every year, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in the holy month of Shravan Poornima. The date will vary every year, depending on the tithi timings. This year, it will be observed on 12th August. Although it is celebrated annually, we still wait for this auspicious day.
The rakhi thread stands for affection, love, respect, and care between siblings. It is a sacred thread tied by sisters on their brother’s wrist for protection and long life.
Every sister wants the best for their brothers. A sister is strong enough to shield and protect herself. She doesn’t need anyone’s protection. All she seeks is love and support from her brother.
